Rushes Log and Edit Decision list

Rushes Log

Naming all of the clips helped me to pick and choose between them. It also helped me to remember similar clips and to be able to differentiate between them.

Edit Decision List

- I have decided my edit will be a very informative realistic style documentary.

- The main theme is trying to get the idea of music therapy being a very helpful resource for people in need.

- This will be conveyed through informative interviews with staff and patients which will form a firm bond between them in the video.

- The flow of the film will be gradually building up with more people slowly coming into it and more information on what it is all about.

Legal and Ethical issues

There were a few concerns with shooting this film. It had to be approved by the line managers at Fulbourn. This consisted of me having a meeting with head of communications and another line manager. They approved my filming in the music rooms as long as the footage is not shown to any person before shown to the managers and the patients. This is to make sure there were no problems with anything on screen or if there was anything that the patients were not happy with or wanted removed. I also had to agree and sign a letter saying I would delete any footage deemed unsuitable or inappropriate.

Dear Sir/ Madam
I am writing to request classification of a short documentary called 'The Recovered'. I imagine the film to be classed as a 12a, it is an in depth view on music therapy and a rather personal context of peoples lives. There is no harsh or offensive language, nudity or any scenes of violence. The only reason for the film to be ideally classed as 12A is that is a sensitive and adult subject to be viewed by mature, understanding people.
I would be very grateful if you were to take the time to watch and give your opinion on the short film's classification.
Thank you very much.
Yours Sincerely,
Edwyn John

Synopsis

“The Recovered” is a community Music Therapy project essentially consisting of a working rock band that does everything a rock band does ie rehearse and perform and we are also intending to record.  The band is made up of staff members and services users who collaborate together on the general work of the band.  The therapeutic aims derive mostly from Social Therapy  where group collaboration, freedom, activity and responsibility are the key concepts.  In essence the work is designed to facilitate the transformation of shame into confidence.  Shame is an unfortunate and powerful affect in the suffering associated with mental health problems (including, in particular, social stigma) and working and performing is a therapeutic way of effecting positive change.  Needles to say the challenges of collaborative working in a band are many and solving musical problems with participants engages all members in systems of dialogue, sharing and communication.

The themes and concept of the film
The concept of the recovered as a group is designed to facilitate the transformation from shame into confidence. The key concepts that come from social therapy are group collaboration, freedom, activity and responsibility. The concept of the film is to put these ideas across and raise the idea that there are other methods of therapy than just medication. The theme of the film is very musical. It's more no the musical side than the technical, psychological side of things.

An outline of the target audience
The film really doesn't have a specific target audience, just like most short documentaries; they are aimed at anyone who is interested in the subject. And that can range very dramatically. It can be aimed at line managers within the NHS to promote the Arts therapies.

BBFC Research

- The BBFC stands for The British Board Of Film Classification. The BBFC are an independent, non governmental body which classify the age ratings of films based on the content after they have thoroughly looked at the films genre, content and any unsuitable scenes for persons under the age of 18 such as drug use, inappropriate language, scenes of a sexual nature, nudity and violence.

This is a documentary that I found very informative
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjGPvOV3wv4

- It was set up in 1912 by the film industry as an independent body to bring a degree of uniformity to the classification of film nationally. Local councils still have the power to overrule the decisions of the bbfc where they can pass films they have deemed unsuitable and ban films they have seen as suitable.

These are the bbfc guidelines for age ratings of films.

- The BBFC say that it is important for their classifications to be in line with the public's views and that they can adjust their decisions according to the publics comments and opinions.

- The BBFC have no legal power, the final decisions is made by local councils. Usually the opinion of the BBFC's work is heavily taken into account but the final decision comes from the views of the council and the public.

The current council membership is:
  • Graham Lee
  • Steve Jaggs
  • Sonita Alleyne
  • Maggie Carver
  • Joanne Shaw
  • Jonathan Teckman

Rough Cut and Peer Feedback

For our documentary to develop we were asked to present a rough cut to the class.
The feedback I received helped me to expand my video and add things I had not thought of which helped my documentary take better shape.

The main things people commented on were:
 - The pace of the video
 - The length of the introduction
 - swapping in and out of interviews and cut aways
 - The context being interesting and different
 - The message in the film

Set Design

I am hoping that the overall look of the film will be from the view of someone just watching what is happening. I want there to be a slight disconnection between where the camera is and what is happening to make it feel like the viewer is being invited into see snippets of the scene but never feeling too involved in whats happening. This may be odd for a documentary but i think the distance between the viewer and the actions and what is happening in the film will set a stronger feeling of emotions towards the information in the film.
